Key Field Air National Guard Base, Miss. -- MERIDIAN, Miss. – The 186th Air Refueling Wing held a change of command ceremony at Key Field Air National Guard Base on Aug. 1, 2026, to welcome Col. Robert K. Brady as its new commander.
Col. Cynthia L. Smith, the outgoing commander, relinquished command to Brig. Gen. Tommy F. Tillman, Jr., who presided over the event as the commander of the Mississippi Air National Guard.
“Over the past few years, Col. Smith has led the wing through continuous deployments and domestic responses, and I thank her for her tireless dedication and exceptional leadership,” said Brig. Gen. Tillman. “Col. Brady brings a wealth of knowledge and operational experience, and I have absolute confidence in his ability to lead this wing to even greater heights.”
Immediately prior to this new assignment, Brady served as Commander of the Combat Readiness Training Center in Gulfport after previously holding other leadership positions in the 186th Air Refueling Wing. His military career spans over 30 years, with deployments supporting operations Enduring Freedom, Inherent Resolve, Iraqi Freedom and Noble Eagle.
During her farewell remarks, Col. Smith thanked the Airmen of the 186th Air Refueling Wing for their dedication and outstanding achievements.
“What the people of this wing have accomplished is amazing. They have responded to both domestic and federal missions, answering the call from the governor and the president in an environment of unprecedented change,” Col. Smith said. “I appreciate those who had the confidence in me to take on the role as commander, and I am so lucky to have had the best job in the world.”
Following the ceremonial passing of the wing’s flag, Brady addressed the unit as its commander for the first time.
“I am honored and humbled to serve as commander of the 186th Air Refueling Wing,” Col. Brady said. Speaking directly to the Airmen present, he continued, “We wear this uniform with honor and humility, understanding it is the cloth that represents the fabric of our nation. We will continue to wear it with honor and humility, honoring the legacy of those who have served our state and nation before us.”
The 186th Air Refueling Wing provides over 1,100 personnel and eight KC-135R aircraft to Air Mobility Command for worldwide operations. Additional units at Key Field include the 238th Contingency Response Squadron, the 248th Combat Airfield Operations Squadron, and the 186th Air Operations Group.
